How to Crop a 2×2 Inch Photo for Paper Printing

Crop a photo to a 2×2 inch (1:1) aspect ratio for US passport paper applications — not the same as online renewal digital uploads.

Paper 2×2 vs online renewal

A 2×2 inch crop is relevant when you need a printed passport photo for a paper application. US passport online renewal uses different rules: JPG/PNG/HEIC 54 KB–10 MB, an original unedited file, and cropping inside the official application — see our US passport portal page for a check-only verifier.

Square digital visa rules (600×600 to 1200×1200 px JPEG) and the Diversity Visa exactly-600×600 rule are separate — see our US visa and DV portal pages.

Take a suitable source photo

Use a plain white or off-white background, face the camera directly, and ensure even lighting. Remove hats unless worn daily for religious reasons.

Crop for print

Upload to ExactPic, choose the 2×2 inch crop preset, centre your head in the frame, and download. Confirm final print scale and PPI with your photo provider — a correct aspect ratio alone does not guarantee the printed size.
